Max Fleischer, Out of the Inkwell

I think this is a very interesting and creative animation work. The main idea of this animation is use the ink to create an animated character, a clown and make the interactivity with the real people in a real environment. The beginning of this animation is very interesting. There is a real person dropped some inks on the paper and moved by themselves. It attracted me immediately. It combined the real world and the animated world. The interactivity between those people and the clown are very natural and vivid. The changes of movements and facial expressions of the clown are very constantly and smoothly. My favorite part of this animation is when the clown jumped out of the paper and into the real environment; he hid in the statue and used the materials to punch the real people. It is a kind of novel type of the animation. It mixed the real world and the animation together. I really like this animation.

Norman McLaren - Dots (1940)

I think this is a very interesting animation work. This animation is not like the other normal animations. It doesn’t have character, dialogue, or storyline in this animation. The only thing they have in this animation is dot. It showed various dots in this short animation, different sizes and different shapes. When the dots started to appear on the screen, I tried to catch every dot and follow them. I need to very concentrate and follow those dots.  I think the most amazing thing in this animation is the combination of the dots and the background music. The dots followed the music and showed in different sequence and shapes. I think the tempo is very important in this animation. The dots looked very vivid. These dots just like having their own emotions and soul.

Gertie the Dinosaur

This animation narrated a story about an indocile dinosaur. It used very simple, clear, and basic lines to construct the basic frames of this animation. There is only very little change between each frame. It makes the animation smooth and dynamic. There is no dialogue in this animation. It used subtitles and behaviors of the dinosaur to make a conversation in this animation. The interaction between the dinosaur and her handler is very clear and simple. It makes a very strong story structure. Therefore, the audiences can realize this dinosaur and the whole story through this silent conversation.  The background music is also very helpful to construct the story. The change of music also affects the feelings of audiences. I think this is a very interesting and impressive animation. It narrated a complete story and showed the personalities of this dinosaur in 5 minutes. The tactics are effective in this animation.
